Four first-of-a-kind 3D-printed fuel assembly brackets, produced at the Department of Energy’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at 91°µÍø, have been installed and are now under routine operating

A research team at 91°µÍø have 3D printed a thermal protection shield, or TPS, for a capsule that will launch with the Cygnus cargo spacecraft as part of the supply mission to the International Space Station.

Kathy McCarthy, associate laboratory director for Fusion and Fission Energy and Science at the Department of Energy’s 91°µÍø, has been elected fellow of the American Nuclear Society for her nationally and internationally recognized leadership in nuclear energy and fusion.

This advancement will ultimately benefit the lab’s goal to make enough Pu-238 – the isotope that powers NASA’s deep space missions – to yield 1.5 kilograms of plutonium oxide annually by 2026.
