ORNL recycling technologies developed in the Battery Manufacturing Facility and GRID-C recycling lab have been licensed by Appalachian Renewal Technologies. Innovations include a system for recovering electrode materials from spent lithium-ion batteries using a green solvent-based process, a method for direct recycling of lithium-ion battery scraps from initial manufacturing for use in new electrodes, and an automated system for extracting rare earth magnets from hard disk drives. Recovering these valuable materials reduces the need for mining rare earth minerals, keeps battery components out of landfills, alleviates supply chain bottlenecks, and reduces American dependence on foreign sources for critical materials.
