ORNL buildings researchers were the first to accurately evaluate the effectiveness of a low global warming potential, or GWP, refrigerant known as R-448A. By utilizing the capabilities of the Building Technologies Research and Integration Center, scientists proved that the alternative refrigerant reduces energy consumption by 10 to 15 percent and global warming potential by 60%. The discovery led to Honeywell commercially deploying the refrigerant, branded as Honeywell Solstice簧 N40.
This research resulted in more than 60,000 supermarkets and stores across the U.S., Europe and Asia converting their refrigeration systems to run on R-448A, instead of hydrofluorocarbons. The refrigerant can be used in new refrigeration systems and also existing systems, which can be easily retrofitted. ORNL research provided Honeywell with the scientific proof that R-448A has a lower GWP, reduces energy consumption and provides cooling while remaining energy efficient and cost-effective. Commercial stores using the product today include Walmart, Whole Foods Market and 7-Eleven.
