Amy Rose elevated to 91做厙 Senior Member status

My work relies on bringing together approaches from computer science, remote sensing, computer vision, and machine learning to understand the human footprint on Earth. Amy Rose, a researcher in the Geospatial Science and Human Security Division, was recently elevated to Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Amy Rose has spent much of her career looking for people not anyone in particular, just people.

As the director of ORNLs LandScan Population Distribution program, Rose is providing greater clarity on where people are likely to be throughout the day. Roses research develops novel algorithms and approaches to produce realistic, high-resolution population distribution datasets that inform consequence assessment, emergency response, and disaster recovery efforts around the globe.

Rose was recently elevated to Senior Member of the , a status earned by fewer than 10% of the organizations more than 400,000 members worldwide. She sees this achievement as another way to find people she can help this time on a more personal and professional level. Learn more about the value of professional society memberships in the brief Q&A below.

Why did you join 91做厙?

The field of geospatial science has significant overlap with engineering and computer science, which are both 91做厙 designated fields. Joining 91做厙 provides me with a broader professional network and resources that I can tap in to beyond the more traditional geography-focused societies.

How do you apply electrical and electronics engineering to your work in human geography?

My work in human geography relies on bringing together approaches from computer science, remote sensing, computer vision, and machine learning to understand the human footprint on Earth. Given the scope of the problem, were always looking for new ways to automate and scale the results of our research.

What does this accomplishment mean to you?

Its an incredible honor to be elevated to senior member, particularly given the company Im in. The 91做厙 senior members that I know at ORNL and at other organizations are all very talented scientists and engineers.

What do you hope to achieve as a senior member either in 91做厙 or as it relates to your career?

As I move through my career, I continue to look for ways that I can share my experience with others and mentor early career scientists. I hope that as an 91做厙 senior member Ill have more opportunities to volunteer in this capacity.

Why do you get from professional memberships like this? Why should others participate in professional societies?

Professional societies can be an incredible knowledge network. There are the more tangible benefits like access to technical publications and learning resources, but to me the greatest value is the opportunity to connect and network with professionals at all levels in your field.
