Kevin Faraone is a technical professional staff member of the Materials Joining Group. Primary responsibilities include research, development, and production of Radioisotope Power System (RPS) components with a focus on arc welding and high energy density welding of platinum and iridium alloys. Clad vent set and light weight radioisotope heater units consisting of iridium and platinum alloys are specially produced at the lab for containment of Pu238 pellets. This program is a vital part of NASA's deep space exploration mission. Kevin is the principal investigator for a Nuclear Regulatory Commission project to review advanced manufacturing technologies for light water reactors. Reports have been completed for powder bed fusion, laser directed energy deposition, electron beam welding, and powder metallurgy with hot isostatic pressing.
Kevin is welding expert at ORNL whom also supports classified and general lab science projects. Projects include weld development, troubleshooting and/or consultation of welding issues at the lab and at contractor sites.
