Layla is a Technology Control Officer in the ORNL Partnerships Office, responsible for mitigating against the potential detrimental exploitation of research in critical and emerging technologies while preserving international research collaboration. She manages ORNL research security initiatives in line with US Department of Energy requirements to support DOE’s broad scientific mission, with particular emphasis on science and technology related to industries of the future.
Professional Experience
Layla joined ORNL in early 2021 as an electrical, instrumentation and controls engineer in ISED’s Enrichment Science and Engineering division, where her primary focus was on programmable logic controller (PLC) and human-machine interface programming and Software Quality Assurance documentation.
She moved to the Neutron Sciences Directorate in 2023 as a Protection Systems Engineer for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). In the Research Accelerator Division, she implemented and maintained high-reliability PLC-based safety interlock systems for personnel protection from unique SNS facility hazards arising primarily from prompt ionizing radiation and oxygen deficiency.
Prior to her time at ORNL, Layla worked as an electronics engineer with Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia and as a hardware design and test engineer with Siemens Industry.
