Marie Backman joined ORNL in 2023 as a Research Software Engineer in the Computational Science and Mathematics Division (CSMD). As part of the Software Engineering Group, she focuses on designing, developing, and deploying data reduction and data analysis software for the neutron science community at ORNL’s .
Marie holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Helsinki, where she studied the effects of ion irradiation in silicon-based compounds using molecular dynamics simulations. Following her graduation, Marie joined the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Tennessee as a postdoctoral researcher. In this role, she used thermomechanical analysis within the multi-physics framework and Grizzly to investigate the fracture risk of aged nuclear reactor pressure vessels for the . Prior to joining ORNL, Marie worked as a Senior System Developer at Consafe Logistics in Lund, Sweden (2018-2023), where she focused on optimization problems in warehouse logistics.
