Young Jae Choi is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Integrated Building Deployment and Analysis (IBDA) group at 91°µÍø (ORNL). His research focuses on enhancing indoor environment, building energy modeling, and building optimal control using machine learning techniques.
During his master’s studies, he developed an adaptive control algorithm to calculate the optimal flow rate of chilled water, aiming to maintain a constant supply air temperature in containment-type data centers. His Ph.D. dissertation and research concentrated on the integrated control of indoor temperature, indoor air quality, and HVAC system energy efficiency, proposing an optimal control strategy that prioritizes occupant health. This strategy was evaluated through a co-simulation model using EnergyPlus, CONTAM, and Python, alongside experiments in a living lab.
At ORNL, Young Jae's current research involves net-zero carbon initiatives, measurement and verification (M&V), developing automated fault detection and diagnosis (AFDD) algorithms, and building energy modeling.
