A polymer composition comprising a covalent triazine framework. Also described are methods for producing the polymer and a microporous carbon material produced by pyrolysis of the porous polymer membrane, along with methods for using the polymer and microporous carbon material for gas or liquid separation, filtration, or purification.

The use of membrane technology will allow a much less energy extensive separation of carbon dioxide compared to the state of the art methods of chemical absorption and desorption processes that require significant energy input to recover the CO2 and regenerate the absorbent material, typically an ethanolamine derivative.
