A method for upcycling cathode materials for lithium ion batteries

The upcycling process we proposed here is efficient, facile, low-cost and environmentally friendly. The high boiling point of the organic solvent allows the reaction to be operated under high temperature (>100C), thus significantly improving reaction rate. The leaching process could be achieved within 1 hour. The unique characteristic of the combination of green organic acid and solvent greatly simplify the separation and precipitation process. The selective reaction between solution and cathode materials avoids introducing impurities and the homogeneous metal leachate could be easily separated from aluminum foils and PVDF/carbon films. Then, adding the Ni acetate at calculated amount in the metal leachate and keep the leachate stirring under high temperature, the metal complex with homogeneous distribution could be precipitated. The collected precipitates could be used as precursors for NMC622/NMC811 cathode synthesis.
