Invention Reference Number

The innovation focuses on a polyphase rotary transformer designed for field excitation in Wound Rotor Synchronous Motors (WRSM), replacing traditional brushed excitation systems. This system aims to improve power density and efficiency by providing wireless, high-frequency excitation. This concept enables higher excitation power for wound rotor synchronous machines, ideal for high-performance, heavy-duty motors in medium/heavy vehicles and vertical takeoff and landing aircrafts.
Description
The polyphase rotary transformer enables wireless power transfer to the rotor windings of WRSMs, eliminating the need for sliprings and brushes. Traditional WRSMs use brushes for power transfer, which cause friction, wear and frequent maintenance. By using a high-frequency, three-phase rotary transformer, these challenges are avoided. The design also significantly reduces eddy current losses and output voltage ripples compared to single-phase systems. This transformer is designed for high-speed and high-frequency applications, such as electric vehicles (EVs) and wind turbines. WRSMs do not use any permanent magnets (PM) and are great alternatives for replacing PM-based motors.
Benefits
- Increased power density: The polyphase system offers better power transfer compared to single-phase designs.
- Reduced eddy current losses: The design minimizes energy losses caused by eddy currents, improving efficiency.
- Higher efficiency and reliability: Wireless power transfer eliminates the friction and wear associated with traditional brushes, resulting in more reliable and longer-lasting systems.
- Compact design: The system allows for smaller and more efficient components, which is crucial for applications with limited space.
Applications and Industries
- Electric vehicles (EVs): Both on-road and off-road EVs can benefit from this technology, enabling efficient and reliable motor operation.
- Wind turbines: Particularly for offshore wind turbines, where large, high-power motors are used, this technology could replace traditional systems that rely on heavy permanent magnets.
- Industrial motors: The polyphase rotary transformer could be applied in high-power industrial motors, improving performance and reducing maintenance needs.
