Packaging Systems and Logistics

The Nuclear Materials Packaging, Transportation, and Systems Analysis Group researches and develops engineering solutions for the long-term disposition of spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste and also for concerns related to radioactive material packages during transport, storage, and disposal. Group members’ expertise includes resolving management problems at the waste package level, examining transportation infrastructure, developing standards and transportation methods, exploring de-inventory options and inventory tracking, evaluating proposed consolidation activities, simulating actual package characteristics, supporting evaluations and testing for security and safeguards, and performing package regulatory testing, modeling, and simulation.

Vision: Develop world-class engineering solutions, design, and testing needed to address the long-term disposition of spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste and create solutions for concerns related to storage, transportation, and disposal of radioactive material packages.

Mission: Evaluate and characterize management logistics at the waste package level and address issues related to packaging, testing, transportation, and handling of waste forms in the package.
