To decarbonize the maritime sector, ships are being designed to run on a variety of low-carbon fuels. Ammonia fueling, for example, could provide significant near-term reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and could be a path toward achieving long-term decarbonization goals. Ongoing research and development projects seek to maximize the amount of ammonia that can be burned safely, while minimizing emissions of GHGs and criteria pollutants.
