Iron doping in MgO was found to reduce COâ‚‚ capture performance because the leached iron ions neutralize near-surface basicity and decrease surface reactivity.
Iron is a common impurity in naturally-sourced magnesium minerals used to produce MgO, and this work demonstrates the importance of using iron-free MgO in direct air capture.
