Bio
Dr. Hyer is a R&D Associate Staff Member in the Fuel Cladding and Core Internals Group where he focuses on additive manufacturing (AM) of metals. More specifically, using processes such as ultrasonic AM (UAM), laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), and direct energy deposition (DED) for potential fabrication of nuclear reactor components from relevant materials. Research interests include embedding sensors such as optical fibers for temperature and strain sensing, refractory metals, high temperature strength stability in advanced steels and Ni-based superalloys, and exploring open-porous structures only possible through AM processes.
