Bio
Dr. Jian Sun is a Senior Research Staff and serves as the Deputy Subprogram Manager for ORNL’s Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning (HVAC), Refrigeration, and Water Heating (WH) research portfolio. His recent research focuses on the high temperature heat pump technologies for both building and industry applications, embedded PCM thermal energy storage heat pump water heater, multifunctional equipment for carbon capture and IAQ control, risk assessment of A3 refrigerants, data center cooling technologies, long duration energy storage, refrigeration system fault detection and diagnostics, and hydraulic CO2 compression cooling. He has over 15 years of industry experience in product development, system and process design, controls, and optimization within the HVAC, refrigeration, power generation, and energy sectors. Prior to joining ORNL in 2019, he served as associate director at UTC-Carrier Corporation, where he led model-based development and data analytics efforts to transform engineering and product development. His work has resulted in 13 granted patents, 5 trade secrets, and over 50 peer-reviewed publications.
