Ruthenium is recovered from used nuclear fuel in an oxidizing environment by depositing the volatile RuO4 species onto a polymeric substrate. Such removal of ruthenium has the benefit of recovering a critical material from used nuclear fuel for use in the electronic and radiotherapeutic industries.
